Silk mice, giant carved pumpkins, jewelled shoes, the seven dwarves and tinsel dresses? You might be right in thinking these are Walt Disney ‘basics’ but they are in fact part of the Princess-inspired AW17 collection by Dolce e Gabbana.
As ever, the duo delve into fairy tales – in this case – Cinderella, rather than the legends of their native Sicily. Models emerged as if from a giant carriage and the catwalk was adorned with a giant book. The symbolism that the designers are imaginative storytellers was not lost on the audience.
There are black ‘widow’ dresses perfect for wicked step mothers, raw hemmed dresses pre-ball transformation and gowns sporting the motif Dreaming of My Prince together with others with mirrors asking Who is the fairest?
There’s also the sparkly blue dress – a take on the ethereal gown Cinders wore to the ball.
Amidst the humour and excess (the dress covered with teddy bears is perhaps de trop) there is much to love. It’s still lady like and many pieces are collector’s items for D&G fans.
