To celebrate the spectacular new V&A Exhibition Road Quarter, opened by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge on 29th June, the V&A is hosting a week-long public REVEAL Festival of arts, dance, music, performance and family events from 30th June – 7th July, admission free.
This masterpiece of modern design and engineering by award-winning architect Amanda Levete and Associates (AL_A) creates major new urban public and gallery spaces, inside and out, to transform visitor enjoyment of the V&A, the world’s leading museum of art and design.
Enter the dazzling new Sackler Courtyard from Exhibition Road, via the historic Aston Webb colonnade of classical pillars, interspersed by modern, perforated metal gates, and you alight on the world’s first porcelain-paved public courtyard, covered by over 11,000 handmade, porcelain tiles in cool geometric stripes and ridges, inspired by the rich tradition of ceramics at the V&A.
To the left, a sleek cafe, al fresco, to the right, an eye-catching reflective ‘oculus’ allowing daylight into the deep, dark cavernous Sainsbury Gallery below, a magnificent new international exhibition and special events space, like a large film studio or ‘lot’ ready to be dressed for action. Blavatnik Hall is the new Exhibition Road Entrance hub, designed to transform how visitors experience and discover the Museum and its collections. Quality attention to design detail is everywhere.
Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A said:
This is a landmark moment in our history. The V&A Exhibition Road Quarter is both the Museum’s largest architectural intervention in over one hundred years and the start of a new chapter in expansion, opening up the V&A for the future.”
